RSO for Pain is Fast-Acting and Effective

Jun 05, 2022

Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is a highly concentrated cannabis concentrate developed by a Canadian engineer who began consuming medical marijuana to control symptoms caused by a work-related accident.

Later, in 2003, doctors diagnosed Simpson with
basal cell carcinoma on his arm. Since the engineer experienced significant relief from the headaches, dizziness, and tinnitus caused by his previous injury, he looked to cannabis as a treatment.

After reading an animal study from the
Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Simpson developed a highly concentrated cannabis oil using a naphtha solvent to extract the active ingredients from cannabis flowers. Simpson later boiled the mixture to remove any residual solvent, and legend has it that his cancerous cells disappeared within a few days of applying the oil.

RSO for Pain: How It Can Help

RSO has one of the highest concentrations of THC and other beneficial compounds than any other medical cannabis product. Although the FDA has yet to approve RSO for the treatment of any disease, many patients and compassionate doctors have used the oil as an adjunct to cancer treatment and to reduce chemotherapy side effects.

Although much more research is needed, several studies have concluded that RSO may be useful for reducing pain and tumors in certain cancers and easing nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. Here’s a quick overview of some of the research the scientific community has done so far:

  • In 2016,
Frontiers in Pharmacology performed an extensive review of all published studies involving cannabis and cancer treatment. The literature noted tumor reductions in brain, lung, breast, thyroid, prostate, skin, and digestive system cancers.
  • A later research review from 2019, published in the Journal of Pancreatic Cancer, concluded that concentrated cannabinoids may help treat pancreatic cancer.

How to Use RSO for Pain

Medical marijuana doctors have also recommended RSO for a host of other conditions, including:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Asthma
  • Infections
  • Multiple sclerosis

Today’s RSO manufacturers have refined the oil-making process to include cleaner solvents, creating full-spectrum extracts with potencies that can reach up to 90%. MMJ patients can get RSO oil in syringes or capsules.

Consumers typically use syringes to rub RSO on the skin, place oil under the tongue, or add to foods and beverages. Capsules provide precise dosages and are convenient and discrete when you’re in public. RSO in capsule form is also ideal for people who don’t like the taste of cannabis. Manufacturers typically make RSO from high-THC indica-dominant strains for their potent analgesic properties. However, you may find sativa-based RSO oil for daytime use.

Before you start using any cannabis product for pain, we suggest that you seek your doctor’s advice. Your MMJ physician can help you decide which types of RSO products and doses would be best for your unique case.

RSO may be inappropriate for people struggling with some conditions and can interact with certain prescription drugs. Since RSO is a highly potent concentrate, people with sensitivities to THC may experience uncomfortable side effects like anxiety, panic attacks, or paranoia.
